European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a 10-billion-euro funding package from the European Union (EU) to support central European countries struggling with the worst flooding in decades. The announcement was made yesterday during a meeting in Wroclaw, which was attended by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the Czech and Slovakian Prime Ministers, and the Austrian Chancellor.
At a press conference following the meeting, von der Leyen assured that the EU would provide long-term support for reconstruction efforts in the coming months and years.
Poland has been the hardest hit by the floods, particularly in its southwestern regions, with Opole and Lower Silesia suffering the most damage. The floods have caused widespread infrastructure damage, forced evacuations, and led to at least seven deaths in Poland. The Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria have also been impacted by the flooding, though to a lesser extent.
