The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) today released the results of the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE) for 2023-24 for the reference period, October 2023 to September 2024. The ASUSE 2023-24 results highlight significant growth in establishments, employment, and productivity in the unincorporated non-agricultural sector, demonstrating the sector’s recovery from pandemic-related challenges and its resurgence with renewed momentum.

According to the survey, the estimated number of establishments registered a growth of 12.84 percent during the period of October 2023 to September 2024 over the previous year. As per the survey, Gross Value Addition, which is a key indicator of economic performance, rose by 16.52 percent, driven by a 26.17 percent growth in the other services sector.

The survey shows that the percentage of female-owned proprietary establishments has increased from 22.9 percent in 2022-23 to 26.2 percent in ASUSE 2023-24. The trend indicates a positive shift in the participation of women in business ownership. This survey also reveals a robust growth of 10.01 percent of total estimated employment in the sector during the period over the previous year.

The unincorporated non-agricultural sector plays an important role in the Indian economy, contributing significantly to employment, gross domestic product, and the overall socio-economic landscape. This sector not only sustains livelihoods for millions but also acts as a backbone for the incorporated sector by supplying goods and services, reinforcing its role in the domestic value chain.
