India has imposed anti-dumping duties on five Chinese products this month, including vacuum flasks and aluminium foil, to protect domestic industries from cheap imports, media reports said.

According to separate notifications from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs under the Department of Revenue, duties on Soft Ferrite Cores, vacuum-insulated flasks, and Trichloro Isocyanuric Acid will be in effect for five years.

Vacuum-insulated flasks will face a duty of $1,732 per tonne. Meanwhile, Poly Vinyl Chloride Paste Resin imports from China, South Korea, Malaysia, Norway, Taiwan, and Thailand will be subject to duties ranging from $89 to $707 per tonne for five years.

The decision follows recommendations from the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), the commerce ministry’s investigative arm.

Anti-dumping investigations assess whether a surge in low-cost imports has harmed domestic manufacturers.

Countries impose such duties under World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations to ensure fair trade and protect local producers.

India has previously enforced similar duties on several products to counteract cheap imports.

China remains India’s second-largest trading partner, but concerns over the widening trade deficit persist, which reached $85 billion in 2023-24.
