The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued an advisory warning the public about a surge in cyber frauds and financial scams that misuse its name. According to TRAI, scammers are impersonating officials from the authority or law enforcement agencies to falsely accuse individuals of telecom or financial violations. One of the most prominent examples is the so-called “digital arrest” scam, where victims receive threatening calls claiming they are involved in criminal activities and are at risk of immediate action.
TRAI clarified that it does not initiate any communication with consumers regarding mobile number disconnection via phone calls, messages, or any other medium. It also emphasized that no third-party agency has been authorized to contact customers on its behalf for such matters. The authority reiterated that TRAI officials do not conduct investigations or collect payments through phone calls, messaging apps, or video platforms.
