United States Senator Lindsey Graham has questioned Pakistan’s role as a possible mediator between the US and Iran, saying it cannot be seen as neutral because of its long-standing opposition to Israel.
In a social media post, Graham claimed that Iranian military aircraft were being kept at Pakistani air bases and said comments by Pakistani leaders about Israel were disturbing. Graham also urged Pakistan to clearly respond to US President Donald Trump’s call to join the Abraham Accords.
The remarks came after Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif rejected the idea of Pakistan joining the Abraham Accords in an interview with a TV Channel. He said Pakistan would not support any agreement that goes against the country’s fundamental ideologies.
Trump recently called on several Muslim-majority countries, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, and Türkiye, to join the Abraham Accords as part of a wider Middle East peace effort linked to talks with Iran. The Abraham Accords are US-backed agreements signed in 2020 that normalised relations between Israel and several Arab countries.
