US President Donald Trump has announced a 50 percent tariff on a range of Canadian imports, accusing the country of continuing to discriminate against American products. The White House said the new duties will take effect in 30 days.
Mr Trump’s latest move has led to fears of a deepening trade war between the two close allies, as the relationship between Trump and Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, continues to deteriorate.
It comes after Mr. Trump confronted Carney over the smoke from Canadian wildfires that has swept down into northeastern US cities, including New York and Detroit, over the last week, blanketing them in a thick haze of air pollution.
Meanwhile, Mr. Carney said Canada remains prepared to intensify trade negotiations with the United States in the coming weeks.
