China’s sweeping military purge is creating a separate challenge for the PLA: maintaining operational readiness while senior leadership positions continue to undergo disruption.

Removing commanders accused of corruption or disloyalty can serve Beijing’s objective of enforcing discipline, but frequent turnover at senior levels can also create uncertainty within military institutions and interrupt established chains of command.

The issue is particularly significant as China seeks to modernise the PLA, expand joint-force capabilities and strengthen its ability to operate across multiple domains.

The leadership shake-up therefore puts two priorities under pressure: ensuring absolute political loyalty to the Communist Party and maintaining a highly experienced, technically capable military leadership.

How Beijing manages that balance could have implications for the PLA’s command stability, organisational effectiveness and long-term military modernisation.
