The US government will start cancelling visas of Chinese students, including those studying in critical fields or with ties to the Chinese Communist Party, said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday. This announcement comes amid a series of developments this week that have added to the growing uncertainty among foreign students in the US.
After India, China is the second-largest source of international students in the US. For the 2023-2024 school year, over 270,000 students from China were studying in the US, making up about one-fourth of all foreign students.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, the US State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security to aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields,” Rubio said in a statement.
