Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has stressed that today’s new world requires a new United Nations and international order to tackle global conflicts. Mr Singh was speaking at the ‘International Conference of Chief Justices of the World’ in Lucknow yesterday. He said the UN could have played a much stronger role in global conflicts such as Israel-Hamas and Ukraine-Russia, and in humanitarian crises unfolding in Sudan.
Mr Singh added that this gap in their action does not reflect any lack of intent on the part of the United Nations; rather, it stems from the complexities of global politics, the influence exerted by major powers, and the slow pace of institutional processes. He said, these factors have often raised questions about the UN’s authority. The Defence Minister said, a balanced representation in the United Nations is the need of the hour to keep this international body alive. The Minister said, the situation can change only when we bring the United Nations back to its core objectives, peace, justice, and equal representation as originally envisioned.
Mr Singh said the whole world needs to learn a lot from India’s civilizational approach in the present international conditions. He said India has always respected international law and embraced multilateralism as a value. Whenever a crisis strikes any part of the world, India has been there to assist, both in heart and in spirit. He further added that India’s policy is clear: Justice is not just a rule, it is a religion; peace is not just a policy, it is a tradition; and global harmony is not just diplomacy, it is a culture.
