Election Commission has issued show cause notices to more than one thousand Booth Level Officers (BLO) across the state for non-compliance with the Commission’s directives. According to commission sources, the recruitment process for BLOs began in the state in April this year but more than thousand BLOs failed to take over their charge till 17th October. They have now been served with the show cause notice demanding explanation for violating Commission’s directives. The commission has made it clear that if the responses to the notices are unsatisfactory, legal action will be taken under the Representation of the People Act of 1950.
It is anticipated that soon, a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the voter list is set to begin nationwide. In light of the current situation in West Bengal, the commission is intensely and strictly monitoring the electoral process of the state. Today and tomorrow, the commission is holding an emergency meeting with Chief Electoral Officers and Additional Chief Electoral Officers from all states except Bihar. It is reported that the situation in West Bengal will be discussed in detail during the meeting.
