Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today laid the foundation stone for development projects worth ₹1,246 crore in Meghalaya, in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and senior state officials. The projects cover key sectors including road connectivity, logistics, tourism infrastructure, education and livelihood development. These initiatives are expected to strengthen economic linkages within the state and improve the overall quality of life of citizens.
A major component of the programme is the Meghalaya Logistics and Connectivity Improvement Project, which aims to enhance access to trade centres and ensure efficient farm-to-market connectivity, benefiting farmers and local producers.
Addressing the occasion, the Union Finance Minister said the Northeast is now central to India’s development journey. She noted that the region’s potential must be translated into prosperity through improved connectivity, infrastructure and targeted interventions. She added that externally aided projects are designed to convert natural advantages into jobs, income and long-term economic growth.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said Meghalaya is currently implementing externally aided projects worth over ₹12,000 crore across sectors such as agriculture, power, infrastructure and environmental conservation. He also thanked the Centre for special support, including approval of key connectivity projects beyond the prescribed ceiling.
The programme also witnessed the inauguration and foundation laying of key road corridors and tourism infrastructure aimed at boosting connectivity, promoting eco-tourism and generating employment opportunities across the state.
