The Indian Navy will commission its sixth Project 17A indigenous stealth frigate, Mahendragiri (F38), at Visakhapatnam on Saturday, 11 July.
The Defence Ministry said the stealth frigate has been designed in-house by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai. The ship has been named after the majestic Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats.
The Ministry said the warship embodies resilience, strength and unwavering resolve, and is poised to forge a distinguished legacy while adding another proud chapter to India’s maritime history.
The frigate is powered by a modern Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, enabling high-speed operations with exceptional endurance across the full spectrum of maritime missions. With over 75 per cent indigenous content, Mahendragiri exemplifies the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The commissioning of Mahendragiri marks another milestone in the successful execution of the Project 17A programme. The Defence Ministry said the warship will serve as a formidable force multiplier, safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests and contributing to a secure, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific as India continues to strengthen its role as the Preferred Security Partner in the Indian Ocean Region.
