The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued guidelines to standardise the design and infrastructure of toll plazas on four-lane and wider National Highways.

In a statement, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said the guidelines would ensure that upcoming and ongoing National Highway projects are equipped to support Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF)-based barrier-free toll collection, allowing vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping.

The initiative aims to eliminate traffic congestion and waiting times at toll plazas, reduce fuel consumption and make journeys on National Highways safer and more seamless.

The guidelines prescribe uniform standards for toll plaza layouts, lane configurations, road infrastructure, lighting, signage and other supporting facilities. They also provide an implementation framework to ensure that the required infrastructure is incorporated into both ongoing and upcoming National Highway projects.
