A disturbing incident involving a Chinese national allegedly behaving disrespectfully toward Muslim women in Pakistan has triggered widespread outrage online. What has angered many even more is the perception that no action will be taken, reinforcing a growing belief that foreign nationals—particularly from China—operate above the law in Pakistan.

Whether isolated or symbolic, such incidents strike at a sensitive nerve in a deeply religious society. Respect for cultural and religious values is not optional in Pakistan; it is foundational. When that respect appears to be ignored—and authorities remain silent—it raises uncomfortable questions about *whose dignity truly matters.

Over the past decade, Pakistan’s deep financial and strategic dependence on China, largely through massive loans and projects under CPEC, has fundamentally altered power dynamics. What was once described as an “all-weather friendship” is now increasingly seen by critics as an unequal relationship, where economic leverage translates into social and legal immunity.

The issue is not about nationality or race—it is about accountability. If ordinary Pakistanis can be arrested, harassed, or punished for far less, why does hesitation appear when the accused is a foreign national tied to powerful economic interests? Silence in such cases sends a dangerous message: that sovereignty can be mortgaged along with national assets.

Pakistan prides itself on honor, faith, and self-respect. Yet incidents like this feed a growing perception that the country has compromised its values in exchange for loans, investments, and political cover. When citizens feel their culture and laws are selectively enforced, resentment inevitably follows.

Economic partnerships should never come at the cost of *national dignity or equal justice*. If Pakistan wishes to be treated as a sovereign state rather than a client one, it must ensure that its laws apply to everyone—locals and foreigners alike—without fear or favor.

Respect cannot be borrowed. And sovereignty cannot survive on silence.
