Today marks the Day of Arafat, the holiest and most significant day of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Millions of Muslims from around the world have assembled on the Plain of Arafat near Mecca for the Wuquf – the central and most critical ritual of Hajj, observed on the ninth day of Dhu al-Hijjah.
Pilgrims spend the day at the site in reverent prayer, a ritual so essential to the pilgrimage that missing it renders the entire Hajj invalid. After sunset, the faithful will proceed to Muzdalifah before returning to Mina.
Among the millions gathered are more than 175,000 Indian pilgrims. India’s Hajj quota for 2025 includes 1,22,518 pilgrims managed by the Hajj Committee of India, with the remainder travelling through private tour operators.
Indian mission in Jeddah say all pilgrims have reached Arafat safely, transported by both bus and train, with nearly half making the journey by rail.
The Indian Hajj Mission has been coordinating accommodation, transport, baggage handling, and medical services in close cooperation with Saudi authorities, including the ministries of Hajj and Umrah, foreign affairs, interior, and health.
Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Suhel Ajaz Khan, speaking directly from Arafat, described the significance of the day: “Today is the Day of Arafat – the most crucial day of Hajj.
The success of entire Hajj operations depends on pilgrims’ visit to Arafat, where they spend the day in prayers. This year, the movement of our pilgrims to Arafat was completed very early, in a comfortable way. Success of the Day of Arafat is the success of Hajj.”
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, obligatory at least once in a lifetime for every able-bodied Muslim who is financially capable.
The Day of Arafat stands at its very heart: a moment of collective worship where distinctions of nationality, language, and status dissolve as millions stand together in prayer on the same plain.
As the sun sets over Arafat and pilgrims begin their onward journey to Muzdalifah, they carry with them the spiritual weight of a ritual unchanged for centuries – a testament to the enduring bond between faith, community, and devotion.
