Tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate, with both sides carrying out strikes against each other amid growing military confrontation in the region. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) today said that its aerospace forces had targeted a US aircraft carrier and a destroyer with several ballistic missiles.
The IRGC claimed the vessels had harassed Iranian ships and participated in a naval blockade against Iran. It warned that if the hostile and aggressive actions continue, the US government should expect a formidable response from Iran’s armed forces.
The escalation follows overnight strikes by the IRGC Navy, which said it had targeted three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and three US-affiliated vessels elsewhere. Iran described the attacks as retaliation for US strikes on Iranian tankers earlier in the day. Meanwhile, US Central Command yesterday said that US forces had struck three Iranian crude-oil carriers. The US military said the strikes came after the IRGC launched ballistic missiles toward two US Navy warships patrolling waters in the region.
