US President Donald Trump has said that the tallest bridge in Iran has been destroyed, hours after threatening to bomb the country back to the Stone Age. The B1 Bridge links Tehran to neighbouring Karaj. Ghodratollah Seif, the Deputy Governor of Alborz Province, where the B1 bridge is located, said the strike had killed eight people and injured 95 others. Mr Trump’s post on Truth Social was accompanied by a video of an explosion. He urged Iran’s government to make a deal before it is too late.
The bridge is part of an ambitious highway project intended to connect Tehran to the Caspian Sea, giving motorists an alternative to windy mountainous roads. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council is scheduled to vote tonight on a Bahraini proposal to secure the Strait of Hormuz. One-fifth of the world’s oil typically passes through the waterway, where Iran’s stranglehold during the war has sent energy prices soaring. More than 40 countries attended a virtual meeting to discuss reopening the waterway yesterday.
