India’s first hydrogen-powered train has completed over 1,200 kilometres of seamless operations, replacing more than 3,000 litres of diesel and emitting only water vapour as a by-product.
The hydrogen train was flagged off between Jind and Sonipat on the 17th of this month. The Ministry of Railways said the train generates electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The process powers the train while producing only water vapour, with no smoke or tailpipe carbon emissions.
The Ministry said the project is an indigenous initiative of Indian Railways. Following the successful operations on the Jind-Sonipat route, trials on the Delhi route will begin soon.
The Ministry said the project will help establish an indigenous hydrogen rail ecosystem and reflects India’s commitment to sustainable, zero-emission rail mobility, paving the way for future expansion and leadership in clean transportation.
