In Indonesia, around 140 passengers and crew are missing after a ferry carrying more than 240 people overturned in bad weather in the Java Sea today.
Indonesian rescuers said at least 102 people have been rescued and the body of one passenger has been recovered as search operations continue around the vessel’s last known position.
The ferry was travelling from East Java to South Kalimantan province. It had departed from Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, for Banjarmasin on Borneo Island. Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, where ferries are a common mode of transport.
Last month, at least 211 people were rescued after an Indonesian ferry caught fire in rough seas near the tourist island of Bali. One person died, and four others remained missing.
Today’s accident comes four days after a passenger ferry fire in the Philippines killed at least 76 people, with more than 10 others still missing.
