Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla led an Indian Parliamentary Delegation to the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Bridgetown, Barbados, where he met several world leaders and strengthened bilateral ties with Barbados and other nations, a release said today.
During his visit, Birla emphasised the deep historical and cultural ties between India and Barbados, highlighting the gift of a historic Speaker’s chair from India to Barbados in 1966. He also noted that the democratic traditions, parliamentary systems, and shared values of the two nations serve to bring them closer.
Birla held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Australia, Jamaica, and Zambia, focusing on enhancing parliamentary cooperation and sharing best practices.
He highlighted India’s experience in leveraging technology and artificial intelligence to promote transparency, efficiency, and accountability in parliamentary processes.
Birla extended invitations to the Speakers of Australia, Barbados, Jamaica, and Zambia to attend the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) in New Delhi in January 2026.
During his visit to Barbados, Birla interacted with the Indian diaspora, underscoring the importance of cultural exchange and shared values. He encouraged the younger generation to learn Indian languages and culture to maintain their heritage.
The visit marked a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations between India and Barbados, with both sides agreeing to explore opportunities for collaboration in education, culture, renewable energy, and parliamentary cooperation.
