World Health Organisation-WHO has reported the first documented human infection with the Shamonda virus in France after an immuno compromised patient died following the infection.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said, the virus was previously detected only in animals, including cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. The virus is believed to spread among animals through the bites of midges, small fly-like insects. However, further studies are needed to establish how the infection was transmitted to the patient and to assess potential public health risks.
Meanwhile, Nigeria has confirmed an imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in Abuja. Health authorities have identified 44 contacts for monitoring.
