Major museums in Paris closed and authorities deployed a massive police force as France prepared for another round of protests today, seeking to prevent a repeat of last week’s violent unrest. The previous demonstrations witnessed widespread looting, torched cars and attacks on public buildings. Masked vandals targeted businesses in Paris and other city centres, raising concerns over public safety and the government’s ability to maintain order.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said, up to 70,000 police officers would be deployed across the country. Helicopters, armoured vehicles and water cannons would also be used as part of heightened security arrangements. Authorities expect another massive turnout, following last week’s demonstrations that drew more than half a million people onto the streets.
